There's no way 5 million people are playing GW. It's 5 million copies sold, inclusive of three campaigns +1 expansion. For the sake of argument say most people have bought those 4, that whittles it down to just over a million in a blink. Then count the hordes of people that bought multiple accounts before character slots went up in the store.
I'd be surprised if there's much more than 5-600,000 people playing, if that.
Anyway, if GW2 does go to a beta in 2008 I'd expect to see it sometime in '09.

Play in the now.
Two years is a long way my friend, a long way. You can still enjoy Guild Wars for a long time to come, most of us will be bored and quit the game by the time the second one is out, so really in the end it didn't matter.

Hate to burst your bubble bud, but, GW doesn't have 5 MILLION SUBSCRIBERS, it's just sold 5 million copies TOTAL of different chatpers/expansion of the game. On the other hand WOW DOES HAVE over 8 MILLION SUBSCRIBERS someone said 10 MILLION not long ago.
GW based on law of averages probably only has less than 500,000 players worldwide. Mainly because you have players that buy one version of the game, play it a bit and then quit. Then you have those that buy several copies of the game which is the same person not a new and different SUBSCIBER because GW doesn't have SUBSCRIBERS for one thing. lol And then you have the regular joe that buys 1 of EACH of the chapters, which once again that doesn't mean a NEW individual player for each purchase.
GW is working on a very LOW population of people playing it now. It has some new players of course and has retained an pct of it's old player base but hardly the same amount as when GW released else they would have sold 8 million copies by now. It's taking longer and longer for them to reach the next million milestone mark than the previous times as well.
So anyway just a correcting you post so you understand GW doesn't have 5 million players and/or subscribers. <grin>

That depends if it's open or closed beta. If it's close beta and only a "preview weekend" like the origional GW then it could very well be into 2010 early part before we see it. Depends on how fast they can wash out the major bugs and apease the preview players of things they found that they didn't like. Or course there will be grind so that's a knowner. <grin>

Why clear the dungeons and raids in WoW when all of the loot you get is likely to become obsolete in the next patch? The answer is the same for the question above: For fun. If you play a game for any other reason you are most likely going to set yourself up for disappointment.

Ecclesiastes 1
Everything Is Meaningless
1 The words of the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem:
2 "Meaningless! Meaningless!"
says the Teacher.
"Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless."
3 What does man gain from all his labor
at which he toils under the sun?
4 Generations come and generations go,
but the earth remains forever.
5 The sun rises and the sun sets,
and hurries back to where it rises.
6 The wind blows to the south
and turns to the north;
round and round it goes,
ever returning on its course.
7 All streams flow into the sea,
yet the sea is never full.
To the place the streams come from,
there they return again.
8 All things are wearisome,
more than one can say.
The eye never has enough of seeing,
nor the ear its fill of hearing.
9 What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.
10 Is there anything of which one can say,
"Look! This is something new"?
It was here already, long ago;
it was here before our time.
11 There is no remembrance of men of old,
and even those who are yet to come
will not be remembered
by those who follow.
- This is one of my favorite parts of Bible.

i agree. i honestly think your whole outlook on this is based on the future of your gaming. Change your mindset - see games as a way of enjoying them for the now, not a chore or something to waste your time away. Trust me, you'll regret it.

All the phat loot the l337 players in WoW have gathered up will do them precisely jack when Lich King comes out later this year. Same with any other game, new ones will come out, later, so have fun with the games you have now.

You think 500,000 is low?? You are superbly mistaken, my friend. And comparing it to WoW is like comparing operating systems. Microsoft/WoW is at the top, GW is like Apple OSX, and all the others are like the kabillion Linux distros (I am not talking about quality here, just numbers). Charts currently show only three MMO's with more subscribers than 500k (besides WoW), and they are Lineage, Lineage II, and Runescape. Both Lineages are mostly played by Koreans who go to game cafe's to play and don't have to pay subscriptions, and Runescape has a free-to-play option so it has widespread use. GW has a lot of people online, it is just that everyone plays WoW especially in Asia. Just like everyone has a Microsoft OS on their computer.
It also took only 6 months to reach 5 million from 4 million. That isn't a long time at all. :/ WoW took anywhere from 3 months to a full year per million subscribers.
Anyway, the take-home message is: don't compare GW numbers to WoW numbers. WoW wins, everyone knows it, yipee horray. Compare GW to other MMO's and it is one of the best selling of all time (as in Top Ten). In fact, it is one of the top selling PC games, beating out Diablo I, Diablo II w/ its expansion (narrowly...), all of the Age of Empires games, Warcraft 3, Neverwinter Nights, and Bioshock.
@OP: What most people have said about any game is true: play it for fun, for leisure. You will then think it is time not wasted. If you think that it is time wasted, then you are probably right.

I feel this way too, my whole guildwars experience has been sour since that announcement. Just when I thought NF was anets 2nd big break. I pick away at every update (like the current one) for seeing all their screwups and the fact that they are not listening to the majority player base, but instead a "select" few.
Also, I believe they took/are taking gw1 in the wrong direction with EOTN and recent updates. We're stepping back instead of forward. Not to mention, now that GW2 has been set into motion, I believe we'll be experiencing more of the wait that came with waiting for the design weapon releases (they had intended to release them much earlier, and you know game companies and their "word")
Oh well, I can keep gw around because of the no monthly, so theres no reason to complain in the end.

Why play or do anything when there is another one coming out? The only fear one would have of GW1s impending doom (draaaaaaamaaaaa) is if their only accomplishment in life is acheiving virtual prowress in GW. ANet is satiating some of that by the HoM, but to be honest, I guarantee the common player doesn't give two rats asses about transferance, they are looking forward to a unique experience.
I knew Diablo II was coming out, but I still played Diablo. It was fun. I have yet to unravel the mystery of transference psychology in MMOs. It is a lot stronger here than in standard games. It really does boggle the mind.

exactly
I dont know why people compare between WOW and GW
GW is in a different niche market and they have a successful business model.
Anyway the whole transference will just be cosmetic ( no added boost or advantage) maybe more emotes veteran titles stuff like that or memrobilia or mini pets
I like GW honestly coz with marrid +2 kids i dont get time to play that much and GW fits right in
BTW to the original thread between now and 2010
there is Age of Conan , WAR and Stargate Worlds coming up not to mention SPORE (though its not a MMORPG).
How many people are attached to this game can be seen at the last new year celebration which was 2 to 3 weeks ago.
At its peak there were over 250 dists opened up in America and over 150 in europe (I know only the English one)
with 400 dist * atleast 500 people on each( there were more ) = 200,000 simaltaneous logged in at same time .

they have mentioned that all the dev team is working on GW2 and there will be only support for bugs , updates (nerf bat) , tournaments and small additions for GW
Anet did loose its way but were smart to recover that why they hacked the 4th campaign
Prophecies was its glory + sorrow furnace update was amazing and to think they are charging 9.99 dollars for Bonus Mission Pack a lot need not be said
But again as there is no monthly fee cant complain much

Seriously, if you like GW, play GW. If you like WoW, play WoW. It's not even like playing WoW is a better value for your money in the long run; you may need to buy GW2 eventually (2009/2010...), but you're paying a monthly fee for WoW.

Just to clarify. GW has not got 5 million subscribers. They have shifted 5 million boxes across 4 releases. That barely equates to 1 million per release, not counting the people like me who have contributed 8 separate purchases (2 accounts, all chapters + EoTN).
Yes, GW2 was announced too soon. It'll almost certainly be an anticlimax now. Still, gives me time to play something else, though I doubt GW2 will appeal at all. Too MMO, not enough RPG is my bet.

Maybe the original post author is afraid of the feeling of farming and playing in GW1, only to have it equate to nothing. Sometimes I wonder about that too. I know that when GW2 comes out, GW1 will still be online for a while. But I'm sure it won't be online like say 20 years from now. At some point it will all be gone. I'm not sure how our accomplishments will carry on. Maybe we'll be able to order some certificate or plaque listing our entire titles tab or something.

The point is, your accomplishments don't have to carry on or whatever. People don't ask for title plaques listing every movie they've ever gone to see, or every concert, or play, or trip to the countryside. Like any other form of entertainment, the reward for playing is the fun you have while playing it, not some nebulous accomplishment or recognition. If it's not fun, then all you are doing is wasting your free time chasing a false sense of accomplishment that you readily agree will not last beyond a short 2-6 years.
I am all for doing things just for fun, and spend most of my free time doing just that. However, if you really are wanting to create lasting accomplishments that you can be proud of in 20 years (rather than just looking to justify the time you spent gaming online after you realized you weren't having fun), take this time and find a quality charity organization in your town. Raise a family. Go back to school and become a doctor. Coach a little league team. Sponsor a local band that you enjoy. Organize a weekly neighborhood block party. Volunteer as a reader at your public library. Raise funds to support your local school district. Join a youth mentoring program. Offer to help that guy who lives across the street with his car trouble. In short, do something that has a real impact on real people's lives. I guarantee the sense of accomplishment from that will outshine anything an online game has to offer you.

Well, thanks for being respectful of my views(sarcasm) and devoting an entire off-topic paragraph to impersonating Dr. Laura. You really had me figured out huh. You sure told me. I'm gonna go out fishing and think to myself, 'wow, that Rekiara guy really put me in my place. I'm a much better person now.'
Anyways as I was saying, a lot of us want a definite record of our accomplishments in Guild Wars. I consider Guild Wars to be more than just a video game when looking at the social aspect, the role playing, and the simulated if simplified aspect of a community. Hopefully it won't all be deleted one day. And I hope there will still be an enjoyment and motivation to continue having fun(which I have always had as a goal as well and have never denied or stated the OPPOSITE) and seeking goals in a game that keeps rewarding no matter how far you go.

Yes. In an ideal world they would have announced it approximately 6 months before the beta, so the population wouldnt linger with nothing new in GW for ages, and with no new news for eons. It would have kept the excitement at its peak straight through and on into GW2. Such a long gap leads to a lull. To do that, though, GW2 would have had to have been in development for a good year or so before the announced a beta was coming in six months or so, and that probably wasnt too practical. Simply would have been ideal. Someone above mentioned the possible anticlimax now, due to the long gap. I'd have to agree on that too.
